****** THE UNOFFICIAL INWO FAQ (Part 3 of 3) Last Updated 6 June 1998 by Steve Hatherley New or amended items are marked '*' ****** 4. CARDS These are official and netrep rulings and errata. When the rulings get to the FAQ, I delete them. I've tried to be complete with the errata. Alien Abduction [This isn't a ruling, just an observation. Personally I believe this card should be restricted to one automatic takeover per turn, on your turn only. Otherwise it is simply too degenerate.] Australian Rules Errata: Add "after the dice are rolled" after "may draw a Plot." (First paragraph.) Bank of England The BoE may be used before Phase 5 of your turn as it concerns card draws. The Bronze Head The card says "if you play a Group card..." This is sloppy wording as "play a Group card" doesn't really mean anything. Errata: Replace the second paragraph with "You may return a Group to your hand if you fail to take it over, instead of discarding it." Blinded by Science [Not a ruling, but given that this card promotes isolationist play (and it's easier than the other Goal Cards) Peter Gleeson has suggested the excellent alternative of treating it as a Control X Science, Destroy Y Magic groups in line with other Goal cards.] Book of Kells If you don't want to take the extra action token provided by the Book of Kells (perhaps because you want to make an attack to destroy) you can move the link to your Illuminati on your turn before you place action tokens, and then return the link to the group at the same time on your next turn. * Centre for Weird Studies * If using the SubGenius ato-instead of Illuminati action rules, you cannot use the CfWS to reload your Illuminati as it hasn't "used" it's action - it never had one in the first place. Clone Errata: Should say "killed" instead of "Assassinated." Combined Disasters The two disasters are considered a single Disaster for effects such as removing action tokens from the target group and the abilities of cards such as Cycle Gangs. Cancelling this card means that this card is discarded. The primary disaster still hits, the secondary disaster returns to its owner's hand, exposed. The following is unofficial: If the primary Disaster is cancelled, that card is discarded. As Combined Disasters is not dependent on the primary disaster (it merely lets you add the power of a second Disaster), CD and the second Disaster return to their owner's hand (exposed). Computer Security Q: What does "concerns computers" mean? A: It means played on a Computer group or powered by a Computer group. This means that Computer Security *cannot* be played to cancel The Auditor from Hell if the Auditor is powered by a Bank group. If a card targets a rival and in doing so affects computer groups (Reach Out, Zaps, etc) it cannot be cancelled by Computer Security as those cards "target" your rival, not her computer groups directly. Errata: Replace "completely negates" with "cancels." Copy Shops The plot you "spend" when using Copy Shops' ability is a cost of the card. It is lost along with the action token if the ability is cancelled. If you play Nevermore, you cannot Nevermore the "spent" card, but you can Nevermore the card that was being copied. If you copy a card that would normally return to your hand (Back to the Salt Mines, for example), then the copy does *not* return to your hand and you cannot play it later. Count Dracula If the Count is brought back into your hand (if his master is destroyed, say) then the links to his Resources are no longer active and the Resources can be destroyed or stolen as usual. (If someone else then controls him, they get the remaining Resources as the links are reactivated!) Note that the Resources cannot be relinked - see the WDH Canceled Actions, Alignment Changes and Other Surprises. The only other way that Dracula's links to his Magic Resources can be broken is Are We Having Fun Yet? (Dracula's Resources cannot even be destroyed!) Dracula is immune to cards such as Gremlins. If he is linked to the Necronomicon and rolls a 12, he overrides the Necronomicon's unlinking ability and drags the foul book with him. In fact, if Dracula is destroyed, his Resources cannot even be grabbed with Cover of Darkness - they're gone. Linking Dracula to Immortality Serum produces an interesting effect. Because Dracula is killed if destroyed, and because IS prevents a Personality from being killed, linking IS to the Count means that there is no way of destroying him! (Er, except using the Voudonistas, which override IS) [Note - this is based on Lynette's ruling, although she didn't explain her reasoning so I have had to extrapolate a little.] Lynette produced the following example which illustrates some of the above issues rather well: "Let's try an example to make this clearer. 3-player game-- George, Martha, and Bob. George has Dracula controlled by another group, not the Illuminati. Dracula has Richard Garfield's Diary, the Black Lotus and Necronomicon (all Magic resources) linked to him. Martha, playing the Adepts, and frustrated because she cannot touch those magic resources, on her turn, attacks to destroy Drac's master, and succeeds, sending Drac back to George's hand. Now, Drac's special ability is now ineffective, and his Resources can be stolen or destroyed. George can't relink the Resources, first because it's not his turn, and second, because the WDH says he can't. He realises he's in big trouble. Martha then plays Forgery on his Richard Garfield's Diary and plays her own copy. Unfortunately, that's all Martha can do for now as she used up all her ways to grab those Resources and she knocks and play passes to Bob. Bob just HAPPENS to have a Count Dracula in his hand that he's been debating using as an agent for some time. Now, instead, he does an automatic takeover of Drac. As soon as Drac comes out, the links to Black Lotus and Necronomicon once again activate and Bob gets them, linked to his Drac. However, Martha still keeps the Diary-- Drac lost it during that time when his ability was inactive. Too bad for George. Maybe next time he'll keep Drac a little closer to his Illuminati. However, he does have one more trick up his sleeve. He uses AWHFY to nullify Drac's Resource-keeping ability and then uses his Suicide Squad to destroy the Black Lotus." Cover of Darkness Errata: Add "You get the Resource in the same condition it was in before it was discarded-- if it was in play, it goes into play; if it was in hand, it goes into your hand; if it was a Forgery, it's a forgery and goes into your discard pile." Crop Circles Errata: Replace first sentence with: "Play this card when you are entitled to draw cards from either your Plot or Group deck." Currency Speculation You may play this card on a group that does not have an action token. Dagobert (one of the German cards) Dagobert's special ability allows him to (once a turn) steal an action token from a Corporate group. However, he can only use this token for defense. Dagobert can accumulate action tokens this way, but if he has any (no matter whether stolen or normal) then he does not get a token during Phase 4. Therefore if Dagobert has a single stolen token at the beginning of your turn, discard it and get a new token that you can do more with than just defend him. Death Mask Q: What happens if you link this to the Punk Rockers and then enter an attack after the dice are rolled? What happens to all the Weird and Liberal groups? A: All that matters with the Death Mask is what the group's power for the attack would be, assuming they could enter the attack. "If it's power is enough to change the attack, that's what happens..." They don't say anything about it's special abilities changing the attack and so on. Eliza If the group that Eliza is linked to is receiving several action tokens each turn, then make sure that the token granted by Eliza is marked as that action token *only* risks crashing Eliza. [Not officially confirmed and I have had a report that an "official" tournament referee ruled the opposite, but I've had no other confirmation either way.] Errata: Replace the third sentence with "But if that extra action ever results in a roll of 11 or 12 (even if only aiding an attack), Eliza has crashed." Fickle Finger of Fate The +10 bonus applies to attacks made directly by your illuminati, not by any other group. (Note that this card becomes interesting during the midgame, when illuminati control arrows are usually blocked - the target illuminati then only gets the bonus for attacks to destroy. However, there is then the problem of the fact that it is easy to remove, but that's another issue.) [By the way, sjg are reportedly considering this and making the bonus apply to the power structure, which would be a real shame as it makes the Zap much less interesting.] France If this group has an action token, then it may spend that *and* it's free move in its own defense - and the defense of any Liberal group in it's power structure. (The WDH says "A group which has two or more Action tokens may not use more than one in the same attack unless it's defending itself." (No Duplicates in the Same Attack) would suggest that it can as it is using a single action and a special abiltity, not two actions.) Additionally, the FAQ says that Good Polls counts towards it's "free" defense - so you'd get its bonus twice! Fred Birch Society Errata: Replace "any Illuminated goal, but not the basic goal" with "Destroy/Control Goal cards only". Gay Activists When you are reversing the alignment of a group with varying alignments, you must check before you use the ability. For example, you cannot reverse George Bush's Conservativism if the player controlling George says he isn't Conservative. If he is, then you can change him to Liberal and George will then be Liberal whenever the owning player wants him to be, for the rest of the turn. (See Bill Clinton for another example.) There is probably a need for the WDH to say "A group affected by another Group's special ability for a specific length of time continues to be affected by that ability even if that effect is made temporarily illegal." [ay] General Disorder The General's ability doesn't help him if the Men in Black aid in an attack to destroy. He is out of the game, for good. (As he is with any permanently-destroyed effect.) If you want to play Are We Having Fun Yet? on the General's returning-to-life ability, you must do it when he returns to the power structure. Unfortunately that only foils him just the once - he's back again next turn. The General works fine with cards such as You Are What You Eat and Sucked Dry and Cast Aside. Very effective. Germany If Germany attacks, or aids in an attack, it can keep adding action tokens as opposition builds up. Germany's actions are actually considered a single action. As the WDH says, "A group which has two or more Action tokens may not use more than one in the same attack *unless* it's defending itself." This means that if Germany attacks or aids in an attack and its actions are cancelled, it loses *all* action tokens so far committed. However it may add more tokens into the attack if it has them because cancelling means that its previous aid never happened. If Germany is defending itself, then cancelling its action means that it loses just one action token. Note that the +10 cards have errata to say that they count only once in an attack. Go Fish Be very wary of this card - it kills deal-making quicker than any other card known to man! Errata: Add "You must give your rivals a chance to cancel this card before naming the Plot card you're fishing for." Goldfish Fanciers Errata: Delete "attacks by" in the second sentence. (The Goldfish Fanciers give you full immunity.) Gun Lobby You can use the Gun Lobby's special ability even if you are hit by an Instant attack, even though the card doesn't mention them. Hat Trick You may not Hat Trick a Power Grab. You may Hat Trick a card that has been cancelled (it is still discarded, after all). Immortality Serum "Just-played" has been defined to include Attacks to Control from the hand. Therefore you can use the Serum to grab a Personality you are in the middle of Attacking to Control. [It's not clear, but I presume the attack must be committed (ie, a token spent) before the Serum can be used.] The Serum can also be used to steal an opponents Personality immediately after he makes an automatic takeover of it. (The new definition of just-played technically excludes this, but I have had it confirmed.) Immortality Serum does not protect against a Voudonistas directed Assassination. [The two cards conflict. This is the approved ruling.] Errata: Add "Immortality Serum, once linked, may not be unlinked." Impostor Errata: Should say "killed" instead of "Assassinated." The Irish Flu If a Personality you are normally immune to has the Flu, your Personalities are still susceptible because plots are directed by the Illuminati, not individual groups. Italy See France. Lama Ramadingdong See France for notes on the Lama's ability to defend Green groups as it is effectively the same as France and Italy. Lyndon LaRouche Errata: Replace the last sentence with "Also, his alignments *never* count for goals." [Sounds like a job for the Dittoheads to me.] March on Washington March on Washington (MoW) cannot power a plot requiring the action of a Group specified by name (eg Angst), but can replace the action of a specific group *not* identified by name (eg, "requires an action from the Group it affects"). MoW can only be used to power an Instant Attack if that card *requires* an action use. So MoW can be used to power a Plague of Demons (with a power of 6) but not a Sniper. Military-Industrial Complex Although Corporate groups are still considered Corporate for the purposes of goals, any power bonuses they receive as a result of being Goverment still count. So, if you are playing Zurich and MIC is in play, if you then lay down a Clipper Chip your Liquor Companies (normal Power 3) now count as double for your special goal! [This is actually tucked away in the VFAQ, but I figure it bears repeating.] Militia Errata: Add "printed" before the word "Power" on the fourth line. Nevermore You cannot Nevermore a card that has been cancelled because Nevermore requires that the card takes effect, and a cancelled card never happened. You cannot use Nevermore on Illuminati cards because Illuminati cards are not played as Plots. By "duplicate" plots, Nevermore includes copies of the same card that have been salvaged, and copies "created" by Copy Shops. "Duplicate" simply means that card cannot be played again. Nuclear Accident The ULE edition of this card is different from the OWE and the INWO book. (So I am told - I don't think I have a ULE Nucelar Accident.) The new version is explicit in that the NPCs lose all their action tokens when this card is played. Nutrition Nazis Errata: Replace the last sentence with "(This may only happen once per game. If this card is in play as a Plot, it may not be brought into play as a Group and vice versa.)" OPEC If Citizenship Award is played on OPEC, it still rolls for its power and takes the better of the two. This is because the roll of the dice determines OPEC's Printed Power - Citizenship Award then either increases OPEC's Permanent Power to 6 or becomes temporarily illegal. Pale People in Black The Pale People's ability to infect the target in an attack with boredom only works when they interfere in an attack. It does not work when they are under attack themselves. Partition Destroying both parts of a Partitioned Place does not count for the Population Reduction goal. If a person plays a Partition and uses one England to attack another England from hand, the Partition doesn't happen until the attack is over. This means that the England in the Power Structure uses its full power for the attack. If the attack fails, so does the Partition. This means that the effects of failing an attack to control on a place that is being partitioned are different from those of failing an attack to control on a normal group from hand: if an attack on a Partitioned target fails, the target cannot be attacked again that turn without another Partition, and Opportunity Knocks cannot be used to make an attack against that target. [rlm] [Alternatively, the original Partition might still be considered to be in play, I don't know.] Pizza for the Secret Meeting This card can be played on a Secret group in your hand to enable you to take it over more easily. (Of course, that helps your enemies to interfere as well . . .) Population Reduction The VFAQ has a whole bunch of stuff to help clarify this somewhat confusing card. Power Grab You may not Hat Trick a Power Grab as the card says you cannot do anything else. Reach Out This card is played at the end of your turn. You can then reload a group with the Center for Weird Studies if you wish because it is still your turn. (Reach Out doesn't actually end your turn. Saturday Morning Cartoons Q: What happens if SMC takes control of a group that has Kinder and Gentler linked to it? A: It depends on when the K&G was played. If the K&G was played before SMC took control, then the K&G link becomes illegal and it is discarded. If K&G is played after SMC takes control, then it overrides the SMC ability - the group is now peaceful. Secret Master A Personality who has a Secret Master played on him or her is *not* an Illuminati; their action token does *not* count as an Illuminati action, and their puppets do *not* get the +10 for proximity. Instead, they are a *member of* the Illuminati and a member of an organisation does not have the powers of the organisation of which they are a member. (For example, students are members of their university but do not have the right to award a degree, even though the university does.) Science Fiction Fans The second sentence is a bit misleading. The SF Fans give their master a +6 for a direct attack, and this is cumulative with the Fans own +2 any attempt bonus. Senate Investigating Committee You can cancel a SIC played against you even though it suggests that you can't. (See Cancelling.) Also, the card doesn't give a time limit on its effect - but presumably it lasts for a single turn only. Sieze the Time * If your Illuminati is linked to the Perpetual Motion Machine, it still doesn't get an action token if you play Seize the Time as your Illuminati is prevented from getting action tokens. Shroud of Turin Errata: Replace "top card in the deck" with "top card in your deck." (It only works on your decks.) State Lotteries Errata: Add "in-hand" before the word "Groups". (This is (at present) unofficial, but at least one person has read this that you can reshuffle your discards!) * Something you can't do with State Lotteries - you can't use Crop Circles to grab a heap of really cool Plots. Why? Because Crop Circles would need to be in your hand, which means it would be discarded when you reshuffled your Plots. (You might be able to use the Rosicrucians to grab that Crop Circles first, then play it (with another Magic action) but I am not sure of the legality of using actions in the middle of a special ability.) Switzerland If Switzerland is made violent and linked to the Necronomicon, it can be destroyed by the Gnomes of Zurich. The Necronomicon's destructive tendencies have nothing to do with the Gnomes. (It's not the Gnomes destroying Switzerland, it's that damned book...) Sufficiently Advanced Technology This card *must* be placed with your Resources. Why? You're not cleared for that but your houseplants will die if it isn't. The link is permanent, however. Supreme Court Nomination When this card says that "any Group can aid either side" does that mean any and all Groups or only those Groups with the proper alignments (as for an attack)? Any and all Groups. Had it been only Groups with proper alignments, the card would say 'other groups can interfere normally', like Epidemic. Talisman of Ahrimanes The Talisman is *not* a magical defense against Assassinations, despite its name. Teflon Coating Errata: Replace "All Media attacks" with "all Media actions spent on the attacking side" The Thule Group As they are not strictly aiding either side when they use their special-ability (they are doing strange and arcane things with powerful magics) they are not affected by NWO Apathy. [Now confirmed.] The cards used in The Thule Group's foul rituals must be used all in one go. You can't discard more cards later in the attack. If you discard Militia and Militia is in play and has an increased Printed Power then the Printed Power of the in-play Militia counts. Same goes for OPEC. Note that The Thule Group cannot interfere in a Truck Bomb because TB specifically prohibits other groups using bonuses - which is exactly what the Thules do. Triliberal Commission Errata: Replace "any Illuminated goal, but not the basic goal" with "Destroy/Control Goal cards only". UFOs Errata: Should say "in hand" not "in play." Upheaval Errata: Change the second sentence to " These cards do not count as 'destroyed' for any reason. The controlling Illuminati merely lost control." (See the ruling on Discarded Groups in Section 2.) Vatican City Errata: Delete "attacks from" in the second sentence. (Vatican City give you full immunity.) Voudonistas A "direct Assassination" is one that the Voudonistas power themselves. So if they power, for example, Poison then the power of the attack (assuming no other effects) is 8 + 1 + 4 = 13. Immortality Serum does not protect against a Voudonistas directed Assassination. [The two cards conflict - this is the approved ruling.] Warehouse 23 If you need to link a Resource to another card (say for the Ark of the Covenant or Holy Grail) then just do it. That it is in Warehouse 23 is not important - the warehouse just hides them from your rivals. Using Forgery to play Warehouse 23 means that the Resources hidden in your rival's W23 are discarded along with his warehouse. You do not get them. You can move items out of the Warehouse during a normal, non-instant attack. You cannot move items out during an Instant attack. If it is destroyed the Resources inside the Warehouse are revealed and also destroyed. (So if there were any unique cards in there, bad luck.) WITCH Q: Can you use WITCH's ability to change the dice roll after an opponent has successfully attacked to control or destroy it? A: No, because the moment the attack succeeded WITCH was no longer yours and you therefore couldn't use its ability. You Are What You Eat Although the card says that the successfully attacking group is destroyed, you cannot play Near Miss on it. It is considered destroyed for the purpose of bringing it back into play, not for any other reason. Note that YAWYE actually says the destroyed group is discarded - you could therefore salvage it with Recyling Centers (it isn't remaining in play to mark its effect) but you couldn't play it without Media Blitz or some other way of getting destroyed groups into play. [Not confirmed, but feels right.] ****** 5. PROPOSED ERRATA Errata that I would like to include in the "proper" errata file. However, before I can do that they must be passed by Lynette. My comments are in [brackets]. Add (somewhere): "You cannot normally discard a group from your Power Structure, but if a card forces you to do so then the Group becomes uncontrolled and is placed in your discarded pile. It may be returned to play if you have a duplicate." Page 6, Resources: [Resources has been rewritten in SubGenius - including many of the changes suggested here. This is what was left out.] Some Plot cards and special abilities allow you to take over Resources. Unless it explicitly says otherwise on the card, you may only play them during your Main Phase. Destroying a Resource that has a continuing effect (such as the Orbital Mind Control Lasers) ends that effect immediately. A Resource can only be linked to a single Group - including your Illuminati. If a group is captured, its linked Resources go with it. If a Group is destroyed, its linked Resources are similarly destroyed - they may be salvaged but a Unique destroyed Resource may not be returned to play. If a group is discarded from play, its linked Resources are similarly discarded. If a rival is eliminated, his Resources are also discarded. You may give away an in-play Resource to another player at any time as a free move (but if it is linked to a Group you must unlink it first). Page 7, Attacks: Replace the third paragraph with: "Attacks are made during your Main Phase and require rolling the dice." New section to Timing: Playing Cards and Using Abilities You may use any card (Plot, Group or Resource) during your turn or your rival's turns, whether it uses the phrase "any time" or not, with the following exceptions: - if the card explicitly says when it may be played (ie, "during your turn" or it reacts to another play) then that overrules anything else. - if the card requires an action it cannot be used during phases 1 to 4 of your own turn unless the card concerns those phases (card draws, etc). - cards that let you take over additional Groups or Resources normally may be played during your Main Phase only. They do not get action tokens unless the card says so. -cards that say they must be played at the Beginning of the Turn (your's or a rival's) but do not concern a specific phase must be played during Phase 1 before Plot cards are drawn. [I think this needs to be in the WDH somewhere (I have suggested Timing) as the current "at any time" glossary is confusing. Am I correct about Groups and Resources? - I don't think this has ever been explicitly official.] Glossary Cancel: Replace the third paragraph with: "If a Plot is canceled, the token(s), card discards (and other costs) that powered it are lost." Cards Bjorne: Replace "Bjorne's Power" with "Bjorne's Permanent Power" in the final sentence. Texas: Replace "the Plot is lost" with "the Plot is discarded". ****** 6.
